Origin & History
From the verb founder, likely from Old French fondrer (“to collapse, sink”), related to Latin fundus (“bottom”). In nautical use it came to mean “fill with water and sink.”

Definition
Foundering refers to (1) a ship taking on water and sinking, or becoming disabled at sea; and (2) a person, plan, or organization failing badly, losing direction, or collapsing under difficulty.
