From Norwegian fjord (also spelled fiord in English), from Old Norse fjǫrðr meaning “inlet, firth.”

Definition

Fiords are long, narrow, deep arms of the sea that extend inland between high, steep cliffs, typically formed by glacial erosion and later flooded by seawater.
