From Middle English *file*, from Old French *fil* (“thread”), from Latin *filum* (“thread”); the sense of documents being “threaded” together led to ‘file’ as a set of papers; later extended to computing for named data collections.

“Files” can mean (1) collections of papers kept together, (2) computer data saved under a name, (3) lines/columns (people marching; chessboard columns), or (4) the action “files” = submits/arranges/stores; it is the plural of “file” and also the present-tense form for he/she/it.
