From Latin fascis (“bundle”), related to fascis/fasciculus and the idea of binding together; the Roman symbol is better known in the plural form fasces.

Definition
In ancient Rome, a fascis (more commonly plural fasces) was carried by attendants (lictors) before magistrates as a sign of official authority; it represented strength through unity and the power to punish.
