यह शब्द लैटिन excessus (अर्थ: सीमा से बाहर जाना/अति) से आया है, जो excedere (अर्थ: सीमा से आगे बढ़ना) से बना; पुरानी फ़्रेंच exces के माध्यम से अंग्रेज़ी में आया। अंग्रेज़ी में excesses बहुवचन रूप अनेक घटनाओं/प्रकार की अतियों के लिए प्रयोग होता है।

Excesses refers to more than what is needed or proper, or to acts of overindulgence (for example, in spending, drinking, or showing force).
