Origin & History
From Latin dactylus, from Ancient Greek dáktylos meaning “finger,” also used for a metrical foot (perhaps likened to finger-joints: long + two short).
लैटिन dactylus से, जो प्राचीन यूनानी dáktylos (“उँगली”) से आया; यही शब्द छंद में dactyl पद के लिए भी प्रयुक्त हुआ (संभवतः उँगली के जोड़ जैसे पैटर्न: एक दीर्घ + दो ह्रस्व)।
Definition
Dactyls are either (a) rhythmic units in verse—each dactyl has one strong beat followed by two weak beats (DA-da-da), as in many lines of epic poetry; or (b) plural of “dactyl” meaning fingers or toes (digits), and historically the term could also refer to a finger-based unit of measurement.
