Origin & History
From Middle English custume/custome, via Old French coustume, from Latin consuetudo (“habit, usage”); later used for duties collected at ports.
यह शब्द मिडिल इंग्लिश custume/custome से, जो ओल्ड फ़्रेंच coustume के माध्यम से लैटिन consuetudo (“आदत, प्रचलन/रीति”) से आया; बाद में बंदरगाहों पर वसूली जाने वाली ड्यूटी/सीमा शुल्क के अर्थ में भी प्रयोग होने लगा।
Definition
Customs refers (1) to the government authorities at borders/ports that inspect imports and exports, enforce regulations, and collect taxes (duties), and (2) to the accepted traditions and social practices of a community.
Customs का अर्थ (1) देश की सीमा/बंदरगाह पर वह सरकारी विभाग है जो आयात-निर्यात की जाँच करता है, नियम लागू करता है और सीमा शुल्क/कर (ड्यूटी) वसूलता है, और (2) किसी समाज की मान्य परंपराएँ व सामाजिक रीति-रिवाज।
