Plural form of cot; “cot” is recorded in English from the 16th–17th centuries with senses such as a small bed and (in some dialects) a small cottage; later extended to a baby’s bed (crib).

“COTS” is the plural of “cot” and most commonly means simple portable beds (e.g., camp/temporary beds) or beds for babies with raised sides; in some older or rare uses it can also mean a small cottage, an animal shelter, a small rough boat, or a protective cover for a finger.
