Consolation

/ˌkɒn.səˈleɪ.ʃən/

Origin & History

From Latin consolatio, from consolari (“to console, comfort”), via Old French consolation; ultimately based on solari (“to comfort”).

Definition

Consolation is the act of consoling or the comfort and reassurance someone receives when they are sad, disappointed, or have suffered a loss; it can also mean a small prize or benefit given to a loser (a consolation prize), or a minor achievement such as a “consolation goal.”
