From colloid + -al + -ly; colloid comes from Greek kolla (“glue”) + -oeidēs (“-like”), popularized in modern science by Thomas Graham (19th c.).

In a way that involves or resembles a colloid, where very small particles are dispersed throughout another substance and remain suspended without fully dissolving.
