Origin & History
From scientific/modern Latin combining coli- (from Latin colon ‘large intestine’) + -form (‘having the form of’), originally describing bacteria associated with the colon; later generalized to a group used as contamination indicators.

Definition
Coliforms are a group of bacteria commonly present in the gut and in the environment; their presence in water or food is often tested because it can indicate contamination by fecal matter and possible presence of disease-causing microbes.
