A cog is (1) one of the teeth on the edge of a gear wheel, or the gear wheel itself; (2) figuratively, a person or thing that is only a small, replaceable part of a large organization or system; (3) in woodworking, a projecting tenon made to fit into a matching slot; (4) in mining, a rough pillar left to support the roof.
