In modern English, cobbler most commonly means a person who makes or repairs shoes; it can also mean a baked fruit dessert with a topping (often biscuit-like) rather than a bottom crust, and has several rarer meanings such as a cobblestone-layer, a mixed alcoholic drink, or (in plural, informal) police.
