From German Kobalt/Kobold (“goblin”), a miners’ term for ores that looked like valuable metal ores but yielded little or produced harmful fumes; later applied to the element (18th century).

Cobalt is a transition metal (symbol Co) that is typically hard and lustrous; it is used to make high-strength alloys, rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, and powerful magnets, and its compounds are used to produce a characteristic deep blue pigment in glass and ceramics.
