Origin & History
From Latin cataracta ‘waterfall, portcullis’, via Greek katarrhaktēs ‘down-rushing (waterfall)’; the eye sense arose from the idea of something obstructing like a barrier.
लैटिन cataracta ‘जलप्रपात/झरोखा-द्वार (पोर्टकुलिस)’ तथा यूनानी katarrhaktēs ‘नीचे प्रचंड वेग से गिरने वाला (जल)’ से; आँख वाले अर्थ में यह अवधारणा ‘अवरोध/परदा’ जैसी रुकावट से जुड़कर विकसित हुई।
Definition
Cataracts are cloudy areas in the lens of the eye that reduce clarity of vision and can worsen over time; the word also refers to a large waterfall or a violent rush of water.
मोतियाबिंद आँख के लेंस में धुंधलापन/अपारदर्शिता है जिससे दृष्टि धुंधली हो जाती है और समय के साथ बढ़ सकता है; यह शब्द बड़े जलप्रपात या पानी के प्रचंड वेग से गिरने के लिए भी प्रयुक्त होता है।
