From Modern Latin byssaceus ("made of/byssus-like"), from Latin byssus and Greek byssos (a fine linen/cotton; later also used for mussel threads), with the adjectival suffix -aceous.

Definition
Describes something that is made of, covered with, or resembles very fine, silky, threadlike fibers (byssus), such as the threads produced by certain mussels for attaching themselves, or downy/fibrous textures in biology.
