From buccaneer (17th century), via French boucanier, originally referring to Caribbean hunters and later pirates; ultimately linked to boucan (“a wooden frame for smoking meat”).

Buccaneering describes the act or style of behaving like a buccaneer—raiding, plundering, or pursuing gain in a daring, lawless, and opportunistic manner; it can also be used figuratively for aggressive, unethical, or risk-taking enterprise.
