From New Latin Bubalis, from Latin bubalus (“a kind of antelope; wild ox”), from Greek boubalos (βούβαλος).

Definition
Bubalises are antelopes of Africa, historically placed in the genus Bubalis; in many modern classifications the animals commonly meant are hartebeests (genus Alcelaphus).
