Definition
Bridewealth is a culturally recognized transfer of wealth from the groom’s side to the bride’s family to formalize marriage, acknowledge the union, and sometimes compensate for the bride’s labor or social ties; it is distinct from dowry, which typically moves from the bride’s family to the groom’s.
