From Middle English dowerie/dowarie, related to Anglo-French douarie and Medieval Latin dotarium, ultimately from Latin dos (“dowry, marriage gift”).

Definition
A dowry is money, property, or valuable goods transferred at the time of marriage—commonly from the bride’s family to the groom’s family in many societies; in some contexts it can also mean a marriage payment from the groom’s side, and more broadly it may mean a gift, endowment, or natural talent.
दहेज वह धन, संपत्ति या मूल्यवान वस्तुएँ हैं जो विवाह के समय दी जाती हैं—कई समाजों में प्रायः वधू पक्ष द्वारा वर/वर पक्ष को; कुछ संदर्भों में यह वर पक्ष द्वारा वधू पक्ष को दी जाने वाली राशि के लिए भी प्रयुक्त होता है, और व्यापक अर्थ में यह किसी उपहार, अनुदान/विरासत या प्राकृतिक प्रतिभा का भी संकेत कर सकता है।
