यह शब्द स्कॉट्स/अंग्रेज़ी ‘blackmail’ से आया है, जिसका पुराना अर्थ लूटपाट से बचने के लिए (अक्सर वस्तुओं में) दिया जाने वाला कर/किराया था; बाद में इसका अर्थ धमकी देकर वसूली/उगाही के रूप में व्यापक हो गया।

ब्लैकमेल का अर्थ है किसी व्यक्ति से पैसे, एहसान या किसी काम के लिए धमकी देकर मजबूर करना—जैसे बदनाम करने वाली जानकारी उजागर करने, आरोप लगाने या प्रतिष्ठा को नुकसान पहुँचाने की धमकी देना; यह उस समझौता-योग्य सामग्री (कम्प्रोमाइजिंग मटेरियल) के लिए भी कहा जाता है जिससे दबाव बनाया जाए।
