Definition
Berchta is a legendary female figure in the folklore of southern Germany and the Alpine regions, often appearing around the Twelve Nights (midwinter). She is said to inspect homes and people—especially the diligence of spinners—and may reward the orderly and hardworking while punishing the lazy or disobedient; in some tales she is linked with Perchten processions and the Wild Hunt.
बर्च्टा दक्षिणी जर्मनी और अल्पाइन क्षेत्रों की लोककथाओं में एक पौराणिक स्त्री अलौकिक पात्र है, जो प्रायः मध्य-शीतकाल की ‘ट्वेल्व नाइट्स’ के समय प्रकट होने वाली मानी जाती है। कहा जाता है कि वह घरों और लोगों की जाँच करती है—विशेषकर कताई करने वालों की मेहनत—और अनुशासित/परिश्रमी को इनाम देती है तथा आलसी या अवज्ञाकारी को दंडित करती है; कुछ कथाओं में उसका संबंध ‘पर्ख्टेन’ जुलूसों और ‘वाइल्ड हंट’ से भी जोड़ा जाता है।
