From backhanded (17th–18th century), originally relating to the back of the hand and later to an indirect or sly manner; formed with the noun suffix -ness to indicate a quality or state.
‘बैकहैंडेड’ (17वीं–18वीं शताब्दी) से व्युत्पन्न, जिसका प्रारम्भिक अर्थ हाथ की पीठ से सम्बंधित था और बाद में इसका अर्थ परोक्ष/चालाक ढंग भी हो गया; गुण/अवस्था बताने वाले प्रत्यय ‘-ness’ जोड़कर ‘backhandedness’ बना।
Definition
Backhandedness refers to an indirect or roundabout manner—especially compliments or remarks that appear polite but contain hidden criticism or sarcasm; it can also mean the quality of using a backhand stroke in sports.
बैकहैंडेडनेस का अर्थ है परोक्ष/घुमावदार ढंग—खासकर ऐसे ‘प्रशंसा’ या कथन जो ऊपर से शिष्ट लगें लेकिन भीतर छिपी हुई आलोचना या व्यंग्य रखते हों; खेलों में यह बैकहैंड स्ट्रोक के प्रयोग/गुण को भी दर्शा सकता है।
