From Middle English "apron" (earlier "napron"), from Old French "naperon" meaning "small tablecloth"; the initial 'n' was lost by rebracketing (a napron → an apron).

Aprons are pieces of cloth or other material worn over the front of clothes, usually tied at the waist (sometimes with a bib), to protect against dirt, spills, heat, or stains, especially while cooking, cleaning, or working.
