From German Anhydrit, from Greek an- ‘without’ + hydōr ‘water’, referring to calcium sulfate lacking water of crystallization.

Definition
Anhydrite is an evaporite mineral made of calcium sulfate without water in its crystal structure (CaSO4); it commonly forms in arid, saline basins and can transform into gypsum when it hydrates.
