From Middle English amercement, from Anglo-French amercement, from amercier (“to punish by a fine”), ultimately from a- (“at, to”) + merci (“mercy”), literally “at mercy” (i.e., at the court’s mercy).
मध्य अंग्रेज़ी amercement से, जो एंग्लो-फ़्रेंच amercement से आया; यह amercier (“जुर्माने से दंडित करना”) से निकला, और मूलतः a- (“पर/को”) + merci (“दया”) से—अर्थात “दया/विवेक के अधीन”, यानी अदालत के विवेक पर।
Definition
An amercement is a legal fine, especially in medieval English law, imposed by a court on a person for an offense or neglect of duty, often with the amount set by the court rather than by a fixed law.
