Definition
Ackee is the fruit of the ackee tree (Blighia sapida). When ripe, the red pod splits open to reveal creamy-yellow arils and black seeds. Only the arils are eaten, typically cooked (e.g., in Jamaican cuisine with saltfish). Eating unripe ackee or the seeds can cause poisoning due to toxins (hypoglycin).
