यह “accent” क्रिया (चिह्न लगाने/जोर देने) से बना है, जिसका मूल लैटिन accentus (अर्थ: ‘जोड़ा गया स्वर/तान; उतार-चढ़ाव’) है; यह ad- (‘की ओर/में जोड़कर’) + cantus (‘गीत/गान’) से बना है।
Definition
Used to describe (1) letters or words that carry an accent mark (diacritic), (2) speech that has a noticeable regional/national accent, or (3) something given special emphasis.
इसका प्रयोग (1) उन अक्षरों/शब्दों के लिए होता है जिन पर उच्चारण-चिह्न (डायक्रिटिक) लगा हो, (2) ऐसी बोली/उच्चारण के लिए जिसमें किसी क्षेत्र/देश का स्पष्ट लहजा हो, या (3) किसी बात/तत्व को विशेष रूप से उभारने/जोर देने के अर्थ में होता है।
