Definition
A xanthate is a chemical compound derived from xanthic acid; it is usually an alkali-metal salt (e.g., sodium or potassium) or an ester, characterized by the xanthate group (ROCS2−). Xanthates are widely used as collectors in froth flotation to separate sulfide ores, and they also serve as reagents/intermediates in organic synthesis and polymer chemistry.
