আধুনিক ইংরেজিতে under- (অর্থ ‘কম/অপর্যাপ্তভাবে’) + supply থেকে গঠিত; অর্থনীতি ও সাধারণ ব্যবহারে ‘প্রয়োজনের তুলনায় কম সরবরাহ’ বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Undersupply বলতে চাহিদা বা প্রয়োজনের তুলনায় কম পরিমাণে পণ্য, সেবা বা সম্পদ সরবরাহ করাকে বোঝায়, যার ফলে ঘাটতি বা অপূর্ণ চাহিদা তৈরি হয়।
