Definition
A thioacetal is the sulfur analogue of an acetal, formed when an aldehyde or ketone reacts (often under acid catalysis) with thiols to replace the carbonyl oxygen with sulfur-containing groups; thioacetals are commonly used as protecting groups for carbonyls and can be transformed (e.g., desulfurized) back to hydrocarbons.
