লাতিন species (অর্থ: ‘প্রকার/ধরন, রূপ/চেহারা’) শব্দ থেকে এবং -ation প্রত্যয় যোগে গঠিত; বিবর্তন জীববিজ্ঞানে, বিশেষত ডারউইনীয় তত্ত্বের পর, বৈজ্ঞানিক ব্যবহারে শব্দটি প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়।

Speciation is the evolutionary process in which populations diverge genetically and reproductively so that they become distinct species, often through mechanisms such as geographic isolation, ecological niche differences, or changes in mating behavior.
স্পেসিয়েশন হলো বিবর্তনীয় প্রক্রিয়া যার মাধ্যমে কোনো প্রজাতির জনসংখ্যাগুলি জেনেটিক ও প্রজননগতভাবে পৃথক পথে বিচ্যুত হয়ে শেষ পর্যন্ত আলাদা প্রজাতিতে পরিণত হয়; এটি প্রায়ই ভৌগোলিক বিচ্ছিন্নতা, পরিবেশগত নিড়/নিশ (niche) ভিন্নতা, বা সঙ্গী নির্বাচন/প্রজনন আচরণের পরিবর্তনের মতো প্রক্রিয়ার মাধ্যমে ঘটে।
