রুশ “Sibir(’)” ও সংশ্লিষ্ট রূপ থেকে; ইংরেজিতে উত্তর এশিয়ায় রাশিয়ার ওই অঞ্চলকে বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়। নামটি সাধারণভাবে ঐতিহাসিক ‘সাইবের খানাত’ এবং আরও প্রাচীন আঞ্চলিক স্থাননামের সঙ্গে যুক্ত বলে ধরা হয়।
