Origin & History
From Latin tropicus (“of the turning”), from Greek tropikos, from tropos (“a turn”); in geography it refers to the latitudes where the sun appears to ‘turn’ at the solstices (Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn).

Definition
The tropics are the belt of Earth around the equator, lying between the Tropic of Cancer (about 23.5° N) and the Tropic of Capricorn (about 23.5° S); it is typically hot and often humid, with many areas having distinct wet and dry seasons.
