From Middle English shoal, related to Old English *sceald (“shallow”), and later associated with senses of “shallow place” and “a multitude/a group (of fish)”.

মধ্য ইংরেজি shoal থেকে; এটি পুরাতন ইংরেজি *sceald (“অগভীর”)–এর সঙ্গে সম্পর্কিত, পরে অর্থ বিস্তার হয়ে “অগভীর স্থান/চর” এবং “বহুসংখ্যক দল (বিশেষত মাছের ঝাঁক)” অর্থে ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে।

Definition

“Shoals” can mean (1) shallow areas in a sea/river/lake, often formed by sandbanks, which can be dangerous for boats; (2) a large number or crowd; especially (3) a group of fish swimming together; as a verb, it means (4) to become shallow or reach a shallower area, and (5) to gather in a group (especially fish).

“Shoals” বলতে (১) সমুদ্র/নদী/হ্রদে অগভীর অংশ—অনেক সময় বালুচর/চরের কারণে তৈরি—যা নৌযানের জন্য বিপজ্জনক হতে পারে; (২) বহু লোক বা জিনিসের বড় সমাবেশ; বিশেষ করে (৩) একসাথে সাঁতার কাটা একই প্রজাতির মাছের ঝাঁক; আর ক্রিয়া হিসেবে (৪) পানি অগভীর হওয়া বা অগভীর এলাকায় চলে আসা, এবং (৫) ঝাঁক/দল বেঁধে জড়ো হওয়াকে বোঝায় (বিশেষত মাছের ক্ষেত্রে)।
