Origin & History
From Italian seraglio, via Turkish saray ‘palace’ (and related forms), ultimately from Persian sarāy ‘house, palace’.
ইতালীয় seraglio শব্দ থেকে এসেছে; তা তুর্কি saray (‘প্রাসাদ’) ও সম্পর্কিত রূপের মাধ্যমে ব্যবহৃত হয়; এর মূল উৎস ফারসি sarāy (‘গৃহ/প্রাসাদ’)।
Definition
Seraglios are royal palaces or grand residences, especially in historical contexts of the Ottoman Empire, where the term often referred to the sultan’s palace and, by extension, to the secluded quarters (harem) reserved for women. The word is now chiefly historical and can be considered dated or Orientalist in tone.
সেরাগ্লিও বলতে রাজপ্রাসাদ বা বৃহৎ বাসভবনকে বোঝায়, বিশেষত ঐতিহাসিক অটোমান প্রেক্ষাপটে যেখানে শব্দটি সুলতানের প্রাসাদ এবং প্রসারিত অর্থে নারীদের জন্য নির্ধারিত নির্জন অন্তঃপুর/হারেমকেও নির্দেশ করত। বর্তমানে শব্দটি প্রধানত ঐতিহাসিকভাবে ব্যবহৃত হয় এবং এর ভঙ্গি সেকেলে বা ‘ওরিয়েন্টালিস্ট’ বলে বিবেচিত হতে পারে।
