From French retable, from Old French, ultimately from Medieval Latin retrotabulum (‘back panel/behind the table/altar’), from retro- ‘behind’ + tabula ‘board, table’.
ফরাসি retable শব্দ থেকে এসেছে; পুরাতন ফরাসি হয়ে মধ্যযুগীয় লাতিন retrotabulum (‘পেছনের প্যানেল/টেবিল বা বেদীর পেছনে থাকা অংশ’) থেকে উদ্ভূত—এতে retro- অর্থ ‘পেছনে’ এবং tabula অর্থ ‘ফলক/টেবিল’।

A retable is a decorative structure placed behind (and usually rising above) a church altar, often made of wood or stone and decorated with paintings, carvings, or sculpture.
রিটেবল হলো গির্জার বেদীর পেছনে (এবং সাধারণত বেদীর ওপরে উঠে থাকা) স্থাপিত একটি অলংকারপূর্ণ পর্দা/প্যানেল বা কাঠামো, যা প্রায়ই কাঠ বা পাথরে তৈরি এবং চিত্রকর্ম, খোদাই বা ভাস্কর্যে সজ্জিত থাকে।
