"র্যাচেট" (একদিকে ঘোরে এমন দাঁতওয়ালা চাকতি-ও পাল/লিভার ব্যবস্থা) নাম/ক্রিয়া থেকে; ফরাসি "rochet" থেকে আগত। রূপক অর্থে ধাপে ধাপে, প্রায় একমুখীভাবে বৃদ্ধি/কড়াকড়ি বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হতে থাকে।
