Origin & History

From Arabic قُطْب‎ (quṭb), meaning ‘pole, axis, pivot’, adopted into Persian, Urdu, and other Islamic cultural languages; in Sufi usage it came to denote the supreme spiritual pole or saint of the age.

Definition

In Sufi Islamic tradition, “qutub” refers to the highest-ranking saint who is considered the spiritual axis or pole around which the spiritual world revolves. The term can also be used more generally to mean a central point, pivot, or focal center of something.

সুফি ইসলামী ঐতিহ্যে “কুতুব” বলতে সেই সর্বোচ্চ মর্যাদাসম্পন্ন বুজুর্গ বা আধ্যাত্মিক নেতাকে বোঝায় যাকে বিশ্বজগতের আধ্যাত্মিক অক্ষ বা কেন্দ্রবিন্দু হিসেবে ধরা হয়। শব্দটি প্রসারিত অর্থে কোনো বিষয়ের কেন্দ্র, অক্ষ বা প্রধান ভিত্তি অর্থেও ব্যবহৃত হয়।
