লাতিন 'punctuare' (বিন্দু/চিহ্ন দিয়ে চিহ্নিত করা) থেকে; 'punctum' (বিন্দু) মূলের ভিত্তিতে মধ্যযুগীয়/আধুনিক লাতিন ও ফরাসি প্রভাবের মাধ্যমে ইংরেজিতে 'punctuate' (ক্রিয়া) এসেছে, এরপর '-ed' যোগে 'punctuated'।
