From phenol + -ic (forming adjectives), with phenol coined in the 19th century from Greek phainō ‘to shine’ (via ‘phenyl’) and chemical nomenclature.
‘ফেনল’ শব্দের সঙ্গে বিশেষণসূচক প্রত্যয় ‘-ic’ যোগে গঠিত; ‘ফেনল’ ১৯শ শতকে গঠিত হয়, যা গ্রিক phainō (‘আলো ছড়ানো/জ্বলা’) থেকে (মধ্যবর্তীভাবে ‘ফেনাইল’ ও রাসায়নিক নামকরণের মাধ্যমে) এসেছে।

ফেনল বা ফেনলজাত যৌগের সঙ্গে সম্পর্কিত; বেনজিন রিং-এর সাথে এক বা একাধিক হাইড্রক্সিল (–OH) গ্রুপ যুক্ত থাকা অ্যারোম্যাটিক যৌগসমূহকে বোঝায়। উদ্ভিদ-নির্যাস ইত্যাদিতে থাকা এ ধরনের যৌগকে ‘ফেনলিক’ বলা হয়, যা অনেক সময় অ্যান্টিঅক্সিডেন্ট বা জীবাণুনাশক গুণের সঙ্গে সম্পর্কিত।
