ফরাসি ossature থেকে গৃহীত; os/oss- ‘হাড়’ (মূলত লাতিন os ‘হাড়’ থেকে) + -ature। ইংরেজিতে এটি প্রধানত প্রযুক্তিগত/সাহিত্যিক প্রসঙ্গে ‘কঙ্কালসদৃশ গাঠনিক কাঠামো’ অর্থে ব্যবহৃত হয়।
