Formed from the verb ‘exoticize’ (also spelled ‘exoticise’), which comes from ‘exotic’ (meaning ‘foreign, from another country’) + the verbalizing suffix ‘-ize’, plus the present participle suffix ‘-ing’. ‘Exotic’ itself comes from Latin ‘exoticus’, from Greek ‘exōtikos’ meaning ‘from outside, foreign’.

Definition
To exoticize is to represent people, cultures, or things as overly foreign, strange, or alluring, usually from an outside or dominant perspective, often reducing them to stereotypes instead of understanding them in a realistic, respectful way.
