সংস্কৃত/পালি ‘ভিক্ষু’ শব্দ থেকে আগত; মূল ধাতু ‘ভিক্ষ্’ (ভিক্ষা করা, প্রার্থনা করে গ্রহণ করা) থেকে অর্থ ‘ভিক্ষা-জীবী সন্ন্যাসী’
