সংস্কৃত মূল ‘উপ-’ (নিকট) + ‘স্থিত’ (অবস্থাপিত/দাঁড়ানো) থেকে গঠিত ‘উপস্থিত’ শব্দে বাংলা প্রত্যয় ‘-তা’ যোগে বিমূর্ত বিশেষ্য ‘উপস্থিততা’
