সংস্কৃত ‘উল্লম্ব’ (উদ্ + লম্ব—‘উপরে ঝুলে/উর্ধ্বমুখী’) থেকে ‘উল্লম্ব’ এবং তাতে ভাববাচক প্রত্যয় ‘-তা’ যোগে ‘উল্লম্বতা’

রেখা, তল বা বস্তুর এমন অবস্থান/গুণ, যা দিগন্তরেখা বা ভূমিতলের সঙ্গে ৯০° কোণে থাকে; জ্যামিতি, পদার্থবিজ্ঞান ও প্রকৌশলে 'verticality' বা 'perpendicular orientation' বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়
