ফারসি ‘তোষা/তোশা’ (সন্তুষ্ট করা, তোষণ) ও ‘আমদ’/‘আমোদ’ (মনোরঞ্জন/খুশি করা) উপাদান থেকে গঠিত বলে ধরা হয়; বাংলায় অর্থ দাঁড়ায় অতিরিক্ত তোষণমূলক প্রশংসা বা চাটুকারিতা
