সংস্কৃত ‘সাহিত্য’ (সহিত + -য) শব্দ থেকে; ‘সহিত’ অর্থ ‘সহ/একত্র’—মূল ধারণা ‘শব্দ ও অর্থের সঙ্গতি/সমবায়’ থেকে পরবর্তী কালে ‘লিটারেচার’ অর্থে প্রসারিত
From Sanskrit ‘sāhitya’ (sahita + suffix), where ‘sahita’ means ‘together/with’; originally implying the harmony/union of word and meaning, later extended to the sense of ‘literature’.
