‘পত্র’ (চিঠি/লিখিত বার্তা) শব্দটি মূলত সংস্কৃত ‘পত্র’ থেকে, এবং ‘রচনা’ শব্দটি সংস্কৃত ‘রচনা’ থেকে এসেছে; এ দুয়ের সমাসে ‘পত্র রচনা’ অর্থ চিঠি/পত্র লিখনের রীতি ও প্রক্রিয়া

পত্র রচনা হলো নির্দিষ্ট উদ্দেশ্যে (আবেদন, আমন্ত্রণ, অভিযোগ, ধন্যবাদ, ব্যক্তিগত বার্তা ইত্যাদি) প্রাপকের উদ্দেশে সুশৃঙ্খলভাবে চিঠি/পত্র লিখন; এতে সম্বোধন, ভূমিকা, মূল বক্তব্য, সমাপনী ও স্বাক্ষরের মতো অংশ থাকে এবং ভাষা-ভঙ্গি পরিস্থিতি অনুযায়ী আনুষ্ঠানিক বা অনানুষ্ঠানিক হতে পারে
