সংস্কৃত ‘প্রতি’ (বিপরীতে) + ‘পক্ষ’ (দল/দিক) থেকে ‘প্রতিপক্ষ’, তার লোকেটিভ/অধিকারক অর্থে ‘প্রতিপক্ষে’—অর্থ ‘বিপক্ষের দিকে/বিপক্ষে’

From Sanskrit ‘prati’ (against/opposite) + ‘pakṣa’ (side/party) forming ‘pratipakṣa’; ‘pratipakṣe’ (locative) yields Bengali ‘প্রতিপক্ষে’, meaning ‘on/for the opposing side; on the other hand’

কোনো বিতর্ক, মামলা, প্রতিযোগিতা বা সংঘাতে যে পক্ষের বিরুদ্ধে কথা/কাজ করা হয়, সেই বিপক্ষের দিক বা অবস্থান বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত অব্যয়; এছাড়া তুলনামূলকভাবে ‘অন্যদিকে/অপরদিকে’ অর্থেও ব্যবহৃত হয়
